Regarding AOL, I own a ton of it. So let me say that I hope there is hope for it, or I am out a lot of $$$. Luckily, I also own a ton of XCIT and ATHM. It was the logical play in this tug of war, and I do not think the war is over by any means. If anything, I think the real winners here are AT&T and MSFT.

AOL will do a couple of things:

1) Complain bitterly to the FCC and FTC regarding the T/Media One deal. Though I don't think it will accomplish much, it should give them leverage in working out a deal with AT&T that will provide affordable access to its cable lines (ATHM).

2) MSFT and AOL's investments/partnerships in DSL technology is still viable for AOL and will only be pursued even harder by AOL now that this deal is done. Unfortunately for AOL, DSL will hurt their complaints against AT&T and its cable investments as is demonstrates competition, especially when AT&T throws out its pricing plans for second lines into the home of ~ $6-$7 per line vs. the $15-$20 charge that those ripoff RBOCs charge. AT&T WILL WIN THIS REGULATORY BATTLE.

3) AOL will be forced to strike a deal with wireless providers (my guess is WCOM) in order to gain further access, but again this will only help AT&T's regulatory efforts.
