Thread,
An excerpt from an analyst report of general interest:
"We believe that ISPs will play a major role in the battle for broadband services. Forrester Research estimates that only 2% of all homes in the United States with Internet access currently have a broadband connection. By 2002, Forrester estimates that 16 million U.S. homes, or a quarter of all homes with Internet access, will employ broadband connections.
Furthermore, since the largest segment of future bandwidth consumers are today's dial-up Internet users, ISPs have a great deal to lose if they are not positioned properly within the bandwidth battle. We believe the multiple system operators (cable operators who offer broadband and other services, known as MSOs) should be aggressively courting the major ISPs to migrate their subscribers to faster cable Internet access before the phone companies complete the roll out (of) their competing xDSL (i.e., Internet access over telephone lines) solutions. Strangely enough, MSOs are not working with the ISPs, but rather trying to compete with them to win over their subscribers."
If that last observation holds, PAIR and its customers could easily erase the broadband lead that cable companies currently enjoy, and very quickly.
