Novell set to ship version 8 of NDS

Novell Directory Services version 8 from Novell Inc. will ship to customers next Tuesday.

Company officials confirmed Wednesday afternoon that the final product, which runs on Novell's NetWare 5.0 operating system, will be downloadable free from the Web starting next week.

Versions of NDS 8 that support other platforms, including Windows NT, Solaris and Linux, are still in development, officials said.

Novell is counting on NDS 8 to become the Provo, Utah, company's flagship product. For one thing, it's a more scalable version of the current NDS. And that added capacity was necessary for Novell to attract Internet service providers and the high-end enterprise market to a directory-centric network architecture. Applications that run on top of the directory, like ZENworks, are considered key to the company's future.

Novell has also been pushing hard to have its upgrade ready before Microsoft Corp. ships its first enterprise directory, called Active Directory. That product is due with Windows 2000 sometime later this year.

The announcement will cap Novell's busy week at NetWorld+Interop in Las Vegas next week, where it will outline plans for its next-generation NetWare. In the coming months, Novell will offer details on its Virtual Replica metadirectory and intelligent Internet caching plans, according to sources.
