Global Semiconductor Sales Climb 6.7% in March From Year-Ago

May 5 (Bloomberg) -- Global sales of computer chips rose 6.7 percent in March from a year ago as sales in Asia and Japan rebounded from sluggish demand through much of 1998, the Semiconductor Industry Association said.

The San Jose, California, industry group said March sales of
semiconductors rose to $11.2 billion from $10.5 billion in March 1998.
Sales in March 1999 also were 2.4 percent higher than the $10.9 billion reported in February.

Semiconductor sales fell 8.4 percent last year amid a slump in demand in Asia and plummeting prices for both microprocessors and memory chips. Sales are expected to rise this year, and the SIA said that forecast is still on track.

Sales in Japan rose 8.1 percent to $2.42 billion, while sales in Asia
rose 12 percent to $2.61 billion. Sales in the Americas, the largest
geographic market, rose 4.8 percent to $3.61 billion.
