Dear Tom,

I can't say I blame Wall Street for not moving on Symantec. The company hasn't executed for several years now, in spite of having solid products. Unfortunately Symantec doesn't seem to have anyone in top management with an ounce of business sense.

OK, I just learn that SYMC is dropping out of the networking business. Great. This after I read Symantec's annual report talking about how the company is going to exploit this growing area. Now they're selling the networking unit to HP? What gives?

Well, I tell you what gives. Gordon Eubanks might rank as perhaps the worst CEO of any major software company. The decision to sell the networking business is emblematic of his lack of vision. The high price paid for Delrina indicates that he can't put together a good deal. In short, the man needs to go and a more capable management team should be put in charge of the talented programming staff.

The company might have been better off if Gordy landed in jail.

To those of who believe in Symantec and the Ghost of Peter Norton, we are, to quote Lyndon Johnson, "like a jackass in a hail storm...we just have to stand here and take it."

Jeff
