As promised, here's a thought-provoking view by the other side...

And again: No, I don't sell candles or whatever Muslim gear to mosques!
Considering your Italian background, you should be aware of the Church of Rome's political clout: European elites in France, Belgium, Italy, and Spain a.o. are infiltrated by creatures from Opus Dei and other fundamentalist secretive agencies... A politically independent Muslim enclave in the heart of Europe would not fit well with their ideological agenda.
Then, just think of what an irony it'd be for Europe to expand farther and farther eastwards while being, at the same time, unable to integrate a tiny Muslim populace living on its Mediterranean flank! Poles, Czechs, Baltics, Byelorussians, Hungarians, Croats, even Ukrainians are all welcomed to the Euro-party --but let not those Turks and Albanians spoil the party! (BTW, do you know of a European disco that would allow brown youths in?)
Finally, you are right to point out that there are North Africans, Asians, Albanians, Turks, whatever all over Europe already... Similarly, one could bring to your notice that likewise, 60 years ago, Europe had Jews in plenty. They were even much better-off than today's ''skunky'' immigrants: they were bankers, media moguls, lawyers, writers (a fave of mine: Stefan Zweig [1881-1942] who wrote Die Welt von Gestern - Yesteryear's World), field officers (remember Dreyfus), you name it. Yet, it didn't prevent them from being severely persecuted...
