It's possible that Butch was a female canary -- who never sing -- they don't have the balls to sing. If so she wouldn't have to be butch not to sing. The fact that she did not complain while being starved to death suggests that she might have had an ideal self that was very, very thin. So I wouldn't feel much regret. Do you think your mother would have fed her something if she had sung? If not, what was the relevance of that factoid?
