It is preferable for there to be two parents in the situation. Running a household without someone "watching your back" is hazardous, and overly taxing. If the child is a boy, it is almost an imperative for there to be a strong male somewhere in the vicinity, for males are more difficult to socialize than females,and male teens are the most violence prone group.
