Here is an Example of a Pretty Reasonable Analyst Commentary:

<<5-May-99 Merrill Lynch Intra-Day Special Note

Server & PC Hardware Update / S. Milunovich

-According to German business weekly Wirtschafts Woche, Siemens AG and Fujitsu Ltd. plan to enter into a European joint venture this month to manufacture PCs. Combined, the two companies currently own about 11% of the European PC market versus 18% for Compaq and 9% for IBM and DELL. The new joint venture is said to be planning to double volumes to over 4 million units, putting it on par with Compaq in Europe.

-We believe the JV presents the biggest risk to Compaq (Nuetral) as it struggles to get on top of both its strategic and executional problems and may be in worse shape to fight off an aggressive local player. Although the new company will also pose a challenge to IBM (Buy) and DELL (Buy), these two have demonstrated more solid strategies and execution capabilities and are growing off a base half the size of Compaq.>>

It sounds about right to me. I expect in Europe DELL will be very aggressive --its tough to compete with DELL's cost structure and its virtual integration model. The consistent IDC market share gains demonstrate this.

Best Regards,

Scott
