I concur with your mention of Trading for a Living by Elder. It may not be the most complete TA book around but it does the best job of explaining why TA works.

I also want to mention that John Murphy revised his book and the new edition is titled Technical analysis of the Financial Markets.
I found his book to be more helpful than I did Edwards and Magee.
