If you are using a fairly new computer that has built in serial/parallel ports on the main system board (not an add-on card), then try the following:

Upon Bootup, access the system's CMOS setup utility (built into the system's firmware BIOS). There will be a setting in one of the screens that allow you to configure the mode that the Parallel port will operate in (typically: Standard, EPP, ECP, EPP+ECP, or perhaps by some other name - a bi-directional mode such as EPP). Select one such as EPP and try it. Save settings upon exiting the configuration utility and reboot. If your scanner doesn't communicate still, go back and repeat with a different mode selected. Give it a shot.
