Re MP3: I remember way back when reel-to-reel and subsequent cassette taping was challenged by the music moguls. Naturally, all they won was the right to place warnings on album covers. So they moved on to CDs, which for a time could not be copied by the average citizen, except to the same old tape media.

Now that CD recorders and DAT machines are becoming reasonably priced, I believe we are seeing the next logical progression i.e. secure copyrighted files distributed either to POS vendors or direct to consumers via the 'net; files that can be burned onto a CD or Flash card only once (due to watermarking), but dubbed onto lower-quality file formats (MP3, tape, etc.) by the user as much as desired. It seems that in this new era, you'll still have to pay to get the highest-quality master files.

New technology, same old marketing tricks. Biggest hook for consumers: "Custom" albums tailored to their specific tastes, with no "filler" tracks to suffer through or skip over. Upcoming feature: Your own high quality MTV show on DVD or megaFlash card, produced by yourself with the acts you want to see. Great stuff!
