I seem to (vaguely) remembering the "drop" onto the planet. Didn't they wear a specialized armoured suit ... or something like that. I remember being riveted on that drop.

Yes -- and the powered suits were completely left out of the movie, probably because you would not be able to see the actors' faces.

Starship Troopers is an instruction manual about patriotism and personal accountability. It produces strong reactions in the reader, depending on your take on those subjects. On Amazon.com, the reviews range from "best book I've read" to "worst piece of trash". Somehow, earning the right to vote by serving your country (not necessarily military service) seemed to be a fascist idea to a few reviewers.
