So if the big boys are so smart, and manipulate the market so effectively, how come 90% of the funds (these are the big boys) under-perform the market? Answer: they aren't that much smarter and they're not manipulating the markets. If they were they would have much higher portfolio turnover rates than they do.

A second point to consider: how is it possible to profit on price manipulation in a widely traded issue like DELL with over 100 market makers? Answer: it isn't because the required number of conspirators would be legion.

I think there is entirely too much paranoia on this thread. I would guess that a lot of the volatility is coming from day traders.
