Sun Microsystems Inc. (Nasdaq:SUNW - news), which already has a deal with AT&T, Oracle Corp. (Nasdaq:ORCL - news) and such ventures as Open TV and PowerTV each make operating systems for set-top boxes.

''There's a lot of people who want to be in this space. Microsoft just elbowed it way past these guys....it is unclear if AT&T will really start spreading the business around,'' said Gary Arlen, president of research firm Arlen Communications.

I think Armstrong's comments about having an open vendor relationship are just made to appease government regulators. Gates wouldn't sink 5B for nothing.
