Concerning the four-satellite system, I see someone else posted a link to the Astrolink service that is being planned for early in the next decade. There are other space systems up now providing packet data (Globalstar, Orbcomm), but they are primarily either narrowband, or else they are hybrid system providing downlink from the satellite and uplink through terrestrial lines (i.e., Direct PC). The Europeans also have a pretty good entry with their Astra system.

Will this be the answer to AOL's broadband challenge? I doubt it, by itself, but in combination with DSL and wireless, I think AOL can essentially control the broadband market before the cable industry has enough subscribers to worry about. I think this is why Case did not want to give up an arm and a leg right now to buy into cable, with so many other options out there.
