Cable is more prone to traffic problems than xDSL. xDSL provides you a dedicated line back to a central switch. With cable, you share bandwidth w/everyone in your neighborhood. It is true that at some point they're all on the same lines, but cable tends to experience more traffic-related fluctuations.

I have a bunch of broadband-related links on a crude MSPG page I've created. If you are not too familiar with broadband, this is as good a place to start as any.
