My guess is that even The Company--dicey as they are--thought he'd gone waaayyyyy over the top when he made up the "Cody" story, and provoked numerous phone calls to them as a result.

So they pissed off at him, and he decided to Show THEM, by selling his stock.

Yeah. He's really that stupid. Though ironically, I suspect he's ended up doing the right thing for the wrong reasons.
