Christopher, I used "I" only because I did not qualify, under your definition, as a "family." The fact is that yes, we did, husband and I, and all the kids, spend lots of consecutive hours together, apart from meals. Furthermore, friends of ours and theirs were often included.
The thing I liked about our household was that the ages were always mixed: young, old, middle-aged, everyone interacted with everyone else. To my mind, that is even more important than doing the nuclear family bit. For one thing, it prevents that "generation gap" from developing. When they reach the dreaded teens, children raised that way are unlikely to consider older people weird out-of-it strangers, IMO.
