Cable Modem with Dual Application of Internet Access and VoIP Provides
Cable Operators with Preview of Coming Revenue Opportunities
ANAHEIM, CA-December 2, 1998-Attendees at the Western Cable Show will be
able to sample the future by placing phone calls using voice over IP (VoIP) technology
at the Libit exhibit in CableNET '98. Libit, a leading provider of silicon solutions for
digital cable applications, will by demonstrating its latest cable modem reference design
which has the capability of simultaneously transmitting VoIP as well as data. These
applications are viewed by the industry as significant revenue opportunities for cable
operators in coming years.
"Libit is pleased to be participating in CableNET '98 where CableLabs has assembled
another impressive collection of leading edge technologies," said Jacob Tanz, vice
president of North America sales and marketing. "Our contribution to this year's exhibit
is to show how a cable modem can support multiple applications, especially voice over
IP."
The Libit demo will be performed using the LBT400E DOCSIS cable modem
reference design. This cable modem configuration fully supports all of the DOCSIS
specified requirements for broadband communication along with telephony interface,
allowing simultaneous data and voice communication. A 10BaseT port provides the
interface for the customer PC while an RJ11 connector establishes the connection to
standard telephones.
The telephony circuitry in the LBT400E includes a Subscriber Line Interface Card
(SLIC) which provides the DC powering, ringing and supervising function for the
telephone. A CODEC converts the analog transmission to digital. The circuit also
includes far-end echo suppression, touch-tone signal decoding, and loop voltage supply.
The LBT400E incorporates Libit's high-performance, low-cost RF design; the LBT
4030 DOCSIS CM integrated transceiver; the LBT4230 DOCSIS MAC IC; and an
embedded CPU. Libit's cable modem technology has been tested for interoperability at
CableLabs, and has successfully interoperated with Cable Modem Termination Systems
(CMTS) built by Toshiba, Nortel/Bay Networks, Motorola, Cisco and 3Com.

CUBE would get to work very hard to get all this added onto one piece of silicon, DIVI would get to add all these features into set tops.
Both division would benefit as compared to another cable modem company , say like TERN, CMTO, which have no silicon of their own. Bold, aggressive, fits ABs set top vision?
Some wind would get sucked right out of BRCMs sails and into CUBE's.
Any thoughts out there?
