Outside of the interuts which bounce around indescriminately, the major players like msft. intc, dell,gtw all seem to closely follow each other and the indices in that peak or dip together. With all the noise produced by analysts today(cnbc etc- buy oils, buy bonds, buy whatever) it takes overwhelming news like a buyout to get real action. Small deals are forgotten in hours or days.
