Mountain Province Mining has been notified by its contractor, Monopros Ltd., a wholly owned subsidiary of De Beers Consolidated Mines Ltd., that a new kimberlite intersection has been made in a drill hole between the recently discovered Wallace pipe and the 5034 pipe. Both of these pipes are part of the cluster of five pipes in Kennady Lake on the company's AK claims in the Northwest Territories of Canada.
The new kimberlite intersection was made while drilling a lake-based geophysical target approximately 150 metres Northeast of the recently discovered Wallace pipe and approximately 150 metres Southwest of the 5034 pipe. The discovery hole was inclined at -45 degrees and drilled toward the Northwest. The hole intersected 43 metres of kimberlite between 56 metres and 99 metres, giving a horizontal projection of 31 metres. At this stage, Monopros is uncertain if this new kimberlite intersection represents a new and discrete body, or if it represents an elongated continuation of the Wallace pipe that lies along the trend between the Hearne and 5034 pipes. Additional interpretation of recently performed ground geophysics combined with the results from the acid fusion of some of the kimberlite (to recover microdiamonds) will determine the nature of further work on this body. In the meantime the drill has moved to another target area north of Kennady Lake.
Following detailed core logging, samples of the new kimberlite will be forwarded by Monopros to the De Beers laboratories in South Africa for microdiamond, mineral chemistry and other analysis.
The company is pleased with the excellent work the Monopros team has done in making additional kimberlite discoveries. Its precise and detailed work has clearly demonstrated that more kimberlites exist and hopefully more discoveries will be made in the future.
The AK and CJ claims in the Northwest Territories of Canada, are held 90 per cent by Mountain Province Mining, and 10 per cent by Camphor Ventures. As reported in Stockwatch on March 10, 1997, Mountain Province Mining and its partners have entered into a joint venture agreement with Monopros, under which Monopros has the right to earn up to a 60 per cent interest in the AK and CJ properties.
