... are you afraid of the big bad wolf from Redmond .....
my oh my ..... how quickly we forget the facts ..... Microsoft got lots of press today regarding their deal with AT&T ..... but think about it, when was the last time you heard of a major vendor (such as Microsoft) paying five billion dollars to a customer (such as AT&T) so their product (Windows CE) might have a major test market experience (in the Denver area, I believe). Do you think their dominant and superior technology is the reason?
They also will be testing Windows 2000 at the same time. Can you say, "please reboot your set-top box?" Are they going to use the last test beta of Windows 2000 - just released this week - or will AT&T wait for the final "bug-free" 35 million lines of new code later on this year? Hmmmmmmmmmmmm.
It looks to me that Windows CE will, in any case, be running under a Java platform supplied by Sun Microsystems - how many ways does that p_ss Microsoft off?
by the way ..... for those of you not as radical as I am ..... TCI - mentioned below many times - is now a part of AT&T. ____________________

SUN'S PERSONALJAVA ENVIRONMENT SELECTED BY TCI AS THE STANDARD PROGRAMMING ENVIRONMENT FOR ADVANCED SET-TOP DEVICES. May 6, 1998
"TCI's National Digital Television Center (NDTC) has expanded its earlier agreement with Sun to specify Sun's PersonalJavaTM environment as a standard programming language on all of its advanced digital set-top devices.
As part of this new agreement, Sun will now provide a software port of the PersonalJava environment for those devices on which Microsoft's WinCE operating system will be utilized. Under the agreement, TCI also obtained the option to license Sun's JavaOSTM for ConsumersTM operating system. In addition, TCI will support Sun's JavaTV Application Programming Interface (API). The combination of the PersonalJava environment, JavaOS for Consumers operating system and the JavaTV API will provide a rich application and content development environment for developers.
'Every WinCE set-top and any device TCI intends to ship with the JavaOS for Consumers operating system will be running the PersonalJava environment' ... said Scott McNealy."
