AMD were working on Cu technology in 1997 and probably 1996. Somewhere under my desk is an article in Semiconductor International from 1996 or 1997 talking about some Cu electroplating work by AMD. Don't make me find it.

PB, to save me looking it up, when did SEMATECH start looking at Cu interconnects? AMD have people seconded to SEMATECH.

About the Dresden fab - AMD are saying that it is built from the ground up for Cu, but IBM recently said that no special containment strategies are used by them. So probably AMD have the Cu deposition, CMP and clean in their own area of the cleanroom, but it probably isn't 'special' in any other way. The 'pods' AMD will use are normal SMIF pods used in highly auotmated fabs.
