Essential? How could an educated person not have read the books you mention? LOL Most people have never heard of those books- and most men gag on Jane Austen. Very brilliant specialized and educated people don't give a shit about reading lists anyway. Now if you are talking about a classical education then by all means, pull out the reading lists. But there are as many different ways of being educated as there are subjects to study. The scientists I know have not read broadly in literature, philosophy and history (for the most part) yet they are by any metric educated individuals and extremely productive.

You could argue that they would be better rounded if they read more, but I am not sure that is true anymore. I now think there are people who are born reasonable and rational and people who are not. And the people who are not can do a great deal of reading and still remain irrational and unreasonable taking away from their study only those things that reinforce the beliefs they began with in the first place. So the curious mind will learn with or with out books and educate itself, whereas all the books in the world can't open some minds to "education".
