Actually, Genji is a woman's book, one of the first written in Japanese (hiragana). Lady Murasaki (if indeed she wrote it) was educated through some trickery in Chinese yet wrote the book so other ladies (who only knew Japanese could enjoy it. I've always thought she wrote it to distract the other butterflies from interfering with her amours. It is even duller in Japanese than in the shortened English translations because its much longer. It is especially long if you don't read Japanese and have to look up every word. It's even worse if you don't read hiragana and have to look up everyone. It's even worse on television (217 installments), although the costumes are gorgeous. I'm waiting until it comes out on cassette in 13th century Japanese.
