Hi Frank, sorry I missed the upriver post on FreeBee. Maybe someday SI will actually add some enhancements to make search and retrieval useful, and maybe even improve the editor with 20th century capabilities!

Thanks for the clarifiers, I wasn't aware of those details or that deployment. My post was more of a “seems it could be done like this….” description, so I appreciate the real-world implementation details.

Were selected channels delivered as MPEG transport streams embedded within the DSL coding hierarchy or something else? Was there an excessive delay when changing channels (guess it would depend somewhat if the new stream was in the same multiplex as the old channel or re-tune/sync/lock were needed on top of that, as well as what exactly they did in the upstream control channel). [I only ask because your wording makes it sound like there was a noticeable and annoying delay]

The VoD angle never seemed economically feasible for such a system when you consider the huge amount of content that would have to be stored and ready for delivery (a la the DirecTV upload facility in Castle Rock, CO [side note: it's interesting to read about DirecTV's uplink faciltiy—MASSIVE data storage], unless there was some collaborative effort on the part of many to collocate this distribution facility and deploy a distribution infrastructure.

Redirecting an MSO's digital broadcast content, on the other hand, would seem to be ‘comparatively' easy and low budget, wouldn't load their system since it's broadcast reception only, and also fits in well with today's delivery system expansion mentality: Pass the duct tape!
