...I guess Sun was more interested in building the plumbing for the
little thing known as the Internet...

Actually, Sun put a press release on their web site in early '98 that they were porting Solaris to Merced with Intel's help after making some kind of deal, and put out another PR a few months ago (as did SCO regarding their own OS) that they had a laboratory version of Solaris/Merced running on the software Merced-emulator setup. Sun took the whole Merced issue more seriously than HP or Compaq.

Maybe the next major Wintel product to ship to customers will be the Windows NT 4.0 Service Pack 783 with the Y3K bug fixed! Meanwhile Sun will have their second generation 64-bit chip out in 1999 with a top-quality operating system that fully supports it on huge multiprocessors, HP will be shipping ever more streamlined toner cartridges, and Compaq/DEC will still be doing a CEO search, trying to find a guy whose face looks sympatico in a RNWK streaming video off their e-commerce site (I hear Fred Rogers of Mr. Rogers' Neighborhood has the inside track for the gig). Which will run on a Sun server, of course.

Hot damn, that proprietary iron is looking better all the time.
(Except for Windows CE of course...that's a serious threat. <g>)
