"Sen. Lieberman warns that lawmakers may act to stop "Joe Camel"-style marketing"
"...If the game industry doesn't clean up its act and stop marketing violent adult games at children, the government will step in and regulate it. That was at least one of the messages coming out of the U.S. Senate this week, as a special committee convened to examine the impact of violent films and games on youth behavior, especially in light of the recent rash of deadly school shootings...The committee on youth violence, chaired by Senator John McCain (R-Arizona), heard testimony from both sides of the issue, but one prominent witness was Lieutenant Colonel David Grossman (retired), an expert witness for the plaintiffs in the Kentucky schoolyard shooting case.
The Kentucky lawsuit, based on a school shooting several years older than the recent event in Colorado, targets the makers of several movies and videogames alleged to have inspired the shooter. Among the defendants are id Software, Sony and Nintendo, among others.
Grossman characterized the first-person shooter genre as "mass murder simulators", and compared the desensitization to violence experienced by game players to the training methods used by the U.S. military, which uses virtual reality tools to help train soldiers..."
