Yes, they do if they have a reason to open an investigation. You can go to the US patent home page and search for a patent. A patent is applyied for in an individuals name by the way ... After the individual has the patent in his name he can assign to a corporation.

For example I have a non restricted warm air license and I have it assign to a business.

GO to any search engine and search for the US "Patent" home page.
