I agree with you that Cisco does not have ATM core switch as today.
The ATM core network will be occupied by ASND/LU and others. The
question I have is if ATM core network is a right thing to do. As you
probably know ATM over SONET wastes at least 25-30% bandwidth. The
good thing about ATM is its traffic engineering. That is a major
reason people still use it today.

There is another new technology called MPLS that will address traffic
engineering over IP Networks. It looks like IP packet over SONET
with MPLS traffic engineering make sense. Who knows time will tell.

It looks to me this is a path Cisco chooses with ATM at edge and IP
at core.Cisco does not have to follow ASND/LU path to strike ATM core
product.
