I wouldn't put Hawking and King in the same category.

Shakespeare is clearly necessary. References, quotes are everywhere- even in cartoons. But I have no idea why, for example, kids in my freshman highschool english class were FORCED to read Silas Marner. Now I adore Silas MAraner NOW- I read it after I had my little girl (who had golden curls) and I felt something I imagine to be almost akin to a religious conversion. I was one with the book. But only because I completely understood (finally) Silas' love for his child, and how gold could become meaningless in the face of that kind of love. Moby Dick is another book that isn't vert suitable for highschoolers. Rather than making them into literature lovers, I think the wrong books (though VERY good books, but age inappropriate) turn kids off, sometimes forever.
