GTE TO EXPAND INTERNET SERVICE TO 120 NEW MARKETS

GTE said today it will begin offering Internet access over the
next four months in 120 new markets, half of which are in key GTE
wireless and wireline markets. Jeff Clark, acting vice president
and general manager of GTE's Internet business unit, said the
expansion will feature a year-long $17.95-per-month unlimited
dial-up access for Internet and long distance customers, compared
with the standard $19.95 rate. The company said more than
200,000 modems will be installed to handle new traffic, beginning
in high-demand markets. GTE said that it has signed up more than
100,000 active subscribers since it began providing Internet
access in July and that it expects to double "and in many cases
quadruple" capacity in all 381 markets where it provides service.
It predicted it would have 400,000 Internet customers by year-end.

Hope this helps someone.
