There is no "law" that requires any company to adhere to ANSI standards. I t is up to each individual company to use whichever standard they want. Of course the ideal situation is to have your product be compatible with other products, that's why standards are implemented. But there are always the renegades who think they have a better idea and decide to go proprietary. Chances are that many companies will choose to go with the Amati standard, though, and yes, that does mean they have to license it from Amati (as Motorola has already done).
