What will the shorts do when they turn on CNBC and they're talking about a "DSL alliance" including everybody that was left out of T's cable party and has an interest in promoting DSL.
Let's see, that would be all the RBOCS, most of the telecom infrastructure providers (WCOM,LU,CSCO etc.), the PC boxmakers who would include the DSL modems (CPQ,DELL,GTW,HWP,IBM) and of course AOL.
I'm sure there are many others that are locked out of cable that want to jump on board the DSL train.
This is shaping up as a war between DSL and cable. DSL is open and cable is closed. Therefore DSL will spread the risk and reward among a lot more players than cable. For example the DSL modems would be standardized and made by all the modem co's by the millions, as opposed to cable boxes specifically designed to work with a proprietary cable system and made by the thousands. This should lead to lower costs and a faster rollout of DSL, once the RBOCS decide to move. Hopefully T just gave them a wake up call. The technology is ready and waiting. The players just have to come together and say let's do it.
Does anyone NOT see this happening soon?
Does anyone think that all these co's are going to sit around and watch T/ATHM eat their lunch?
I don't think so, but would welcome all opinions.
