I would disagree that Sun took Merced more seriously than HP or Compaq - especially since HP was the co-creator of Merced and had at that time had a terminal release of PA-RISC scheduled. Clearly Sun was working with Intel to optimize Solaris for Merced for the first time but that was it. No more than SCO or any other Unix on Intel variant was doing. In retrospect Sun was trying to cover its bases and maybe were a little spooked that Merced was real. Sun has been succesful because its been focused - even spreading the OS on different architectures is a big distraction. Look at HP - there message is already so tortured even without the slip in Merced. If a customer buys PA-Risc what will kind of migration will they have to look forward to especially as any IA-64 processor will be way behind in performance for years - are they supposed to be convinced that HP is continuing to invest in PA-RISC or that applications for PA-RISC will continue to be developed?
