Jules,

I agree with much of what you write. AT&T national coverage with cable does highlight that copper is no longer the only game in town. Now the rbocs will have competition regardless of their efforts to stop it. Data & voice convergence is no longer a possiblilty, but something that will happen. I, like you think that this will help IDTC.

Where I differ is my belief that AT&T will move much more quickly in bringing voice/data/programming to market. AT&T had plans for a telephony rollout into 10 test markets by 2000 (7 month's) with TCI. But TCI's network needs upgrading and made this doubtful. With the purchase of Media One, AT&T gets 6 markets already rolling out switched telephony so they only need 4 more to meet their goal.

Also, AT&T is going to bring back AmosHostetter as chairman of AT&T Broadband. He was founder and chairman of Continental Cabelvision before it was sold to MediaOne. He was a very capable CEO and will do well again.

AT&T is not the slumbering giant it used to be so I would not make bets that they won't gear up into the telephony market quickly. All the telcos see the hand writing and I think IDT, AT&T and some others are poised to grab for the gold ring.

Bill
