"What surprised me is the amount of anti-US behavior
in China right now."

I was in Beijing just a few weeks ago, and not surprisingly, the news the Chinese get are pretty much the Serb version, so there was a lot of outrage even before this latest screw up.

Also, the Chinese are incredibly sensitive when it comes to demonstrations of what they perceive as another from of colonial imperialism.

They are still ressassing what Europeans powers did in China in the mid 1800, and the forced concessions Europe obtained.

The British-French expeditionary war of 1863, where British and French troops burnt many of the public/imperial buildings in Beijing, is still very much talked about.

Likewise, the Hong-Kong handover was a huge deal for the average Chinese, and so is the coming Macau handover later this year.

This reaction of the students, which was obviously tolerated by the authorities, is a big red flag for Taiwan, which most Chinese want to see reunited with the mainland, and for which US assistance is becoming less and less tolerated.
