Playing devil's avocado, as is my wont, I think the Hayward sign is better than what I grew up with. De facto racism is as bad as de jure, and it was wide-spread and tolerated at all levels of government in the 1950's and 1960's in Louisiana, and elsewhere in the South. I remember a man from Tyler, Texas, who told me that there was a sign posted at the entry to the town, saying "Nigger, don't let the sun go down on you here."

I remember when black people who tried to swim from the public beaches in Biloxi would be arrested. I remember when black people who tried to swim in public pools in Baton Rouge and New Orleans would be arrested.

Maybe out in sunny California, you can tell yourself, "it can't happen here," but it seems to happen elsewhere with dismal frequency.
