Derek, I started "The Seven Pillars of Wisdom", lent it to a friend, and never saw it again (these things happen, especially in college). I didn't get far, but it seemed to live up to its reputation. If you like Dostoyevsky at all, and haven't yet read it, try "The Possessed" (also translated as "The Devil's"), a very black comedy about the inanity of Russian liberals and the delusions of the Russian left...If you just want a bouncing good read that is both British and wickedly intelligent, try a bunch of Bernard Shaw plays, especially "Major Barbara", "Man and Superman", "Candide", and "Arms and the Man... |
