Service Pack 5 for Windows NT officially released
This time it's official: Microsoft has released a fifth Service Pack for WinNT 4.0, making your install CD even more outta date. (I saw the news at the 'shack, who gleaned it from Redw00d, by the way.) This is a cumulative patch; SP5 is all you'll need to update after a fresh install. Here are the most requested updates and fix included in SP5:

- DHCP Server of SP4 Ignores Reservations
- SP4 forces cluster servers to be taken off and online
- Windows NT 4.0 SP4 Does Not Update MTS Files
- Duplicate SCSI Logical Unit (LUN) 0 When LargeLUNs Registry Key Enabled
- Under stress, a computer running Windows NT Server or Workstation may display a STOP 0x0000001E error message on a blue screen.
- Cannot configure ODBC logging when using Microsoft Data Access Components (MDAC) 2.0 SP1, SP4, and Proxy Server 2.0.
- Secondary WINS query delayed by 1500ms even when primary WINS returns 'na
- Using SP4, RCP "host:foo ." fails whereas RCP "host:foo foo"
- SP4 systems access the hard disks every five minutes, which interferes with Power Management.

I like that fifth item. They fixed the BSOD! They fixed the BSOD! (From now it, it's the Green Screen of Death, dag nabbit.) And, to Panders's surprise, the 40 and 128-bit versions are both available (it always seems like the 128-bit version of anything comes out days later). For those of you not yet ready to take the plunge all at once, get info on individual hotfixes from Panders' excellent article on Life After SP4. -Damage & Panders
