<<Ish, I keep coming back to this posting on racism. Why do you think that this is happening, this intense divisiveness that you describe? >>

I don't think there is a single answer. In part my area has had a lot of growth the last few years and as populations grow they tend to fracture into interest groups and groups tend to see themselves as right and other groups as wrong. Also I think people are feeling pressured more today and want to place blame on others, especially those who may look different.

A little something that is going on in this area now-

Caterpillar is a major employer in the Peoria area. About 5 years ago the union went on strike, after several months Cat started hiring from the outside and also said they would take back any workers who crossed the line. Now these jobs pay on average of $24 per hour, have full medical and dental coverage and one hell of a good pension. By full medical I mean 100%, no limit with even glasses being covered. Not a bad deal for someone with just a high school diploma.

Now here's the racist part. Most of the workers went back but a few from the Canton area stayed out and lost their jobs. After a year of waving scab signs and winding up with $5 per hour jobs these guys formed a KKK branch. I doubt there is one black person in their whole redneck county but they needed to hate someone.
