Dell, Compaq and Gateway should be worried but not Citrix. In fact, I think Citrix will benefit. As others have said, a huge benefit of Citrix is never having to visit that machine (whether a 386 or Pentium II 400) again. I delay deployment of updated versions of my client server application because it means I have to visit the machines of all 25 users. With Citrix, I install the new version once. You can imagine what it takes to upgrade 500 (or 5000) machines and that would have to happen every time a new version of Microsoft Office or cc:Mail (or a new OS) becomes available. This is the reason, as opposed to the cost of the hardware or software, that some corporate users are still running MS Office 4.2 rather than upgrading to Office 97 or why there are 3 or 4 different versions of the email client running within one corporation. The human resources necessary to keep up are daunting. The initial effort and cost at getting a Citrix server up and running aren't insignificant but I think it compares with the installation of a new app (or version) on several dozen PCs. If you have to replace PCs (because the Pentium 75 they currently have doesn't run Office 97 quickly enough) then the number drops even further. With server prices dropping its hard to see how even a small company couldn't save money and time by using Citrix. And this doesn't even include the benefits of Citrix for remote access.
