Aloha Lee. Thanks for the link to the excellent article on CPQ/5fer problems. I was particularly interested in the fact the some CPQ management wanted to buy GTW rather than DEC. << When Pfeiffer tried to buy Digital's services arm alone, he was rebuffed. So he bought the whole company, with its conservative culture and many underperforming businesses. Chief strategist Stearns opposed the deal, believing Compaq would be better off purchasing Gateway to get into the business of selling computers directly.>> Sorry, part of my post got cut off! It is likely, with 5fer gone, that there are still management forces in favor of a GTW bid. IMO a Dell buyout of GTW would serve to give Dell instant and full access to the consumer market and relegate CPQ to an also ran for years to come. It also would give Dell the opportunity to see how GTW's experiment with brick and mortar works out. It seems to me that during the transition from bricks and mortar to cyberspace, consumers will need a certain amount of hands on experience before making their first purchase of a computer and GTW's move in that direction might prove profitable. I would be interesterd in comments. thanks and aloha.
