Trying to understand the House positions ...

"Since April 8 1999, Thomson Kernaghan has sold about 6.350 million of share SBX and Global Securities has sold 2.340 million."

PROBABILITY,

I am new to this type of analysis. I always thought that brokers only execute trades on behalf of retail or institution clients.

My question is more general as I have seen House positions (for the day or more) published on many threads. How can you find out if the Brokers are actually accumulating, selling, short selling or covering by looking on these figures ?

Is this actually happening that way, Brokers do trade for their own profit ?

Sorry if the answers to these questions are obvious, ... they are not for me.

Thank you,
John
