RTev, Excellent analysis of AOL's chat rooms and ability to hold on to certain types of users. I agree that it is their "killer app" for the time being. It is the only reason AOL is not opening up for non-AOL members.
My guess is that at this point in time, their analysis suggests the costs outweigh the benefits if they open up the AOL chats to all net users. I have a feeling it is only a matter time of time before they become more like MSN, Yahoo, Lycos etc.
The reason they may be waiting could be somehow related to the ever changing arena of high speed net access.
