Good post, Bull. Welcome back to a kinder, gentler SD. Be a good boy. Diana is watching.<vbg>

All still trade above their 50 dma
When you use the moving averages, aren't you saying that a long-term bull trend is in effect and will only be interrupted by shallow downturns ? It seems that in any sharp correction, waiting for 50 or 200 SMA crosses would probably result in loss of the greater portion of recent gains.

I've been very surprised to see how well the MACD performed during the last year. My chart shows RIG being traded for a small gain using MACD during the last year while the stock declines 50%.

Trading RIG for the last year using MA's would have probably had a 20-35% loss. That period was really a ten-month decline punctuated by short, sharp rallies followed by a strong two-month rally. Not sure how the MACD would work in a sustained uptrend. Probably not as well as moving averages.

The MACD monthly charts are only now issuing BUY signals
Isn't that saying the monthlies react too slowly to a change in direction in a volatile sector? It looks like the monthly would have kept you out for most of 1998. Now thats good...hmmmmm.

Best,
John
