John,

It is frequent for speculators to blame someone else when the price does not go in the direction they want. They often blame the brokerage firm, even though you can't tell if the sales came from a clients account or the firms's trading account. People don't stop and think that it is not to one's advantage to "dump" shares if you think they are undervalued! Shares are "dumped" when it is deemed that they have reached a target price or if the opinion on the stock has turned negative.

Brokerage firms have a capital base of their own, some of which is used to lend money to clients (margin accounts) and some of which is invested in money market instruments, bonds and stocks.
