Casaubon, are you familiar with the Drake equation? i would say that the sheer vastness of the universe argues very strongly for extraterrestrials to exist. what i strongly doubt is that any of them would be able to engage in interstellar travel. the laws of physics are a tad too unforgiving for that. even if a way were found to actually harness the amounts of energy needed to accelerate and decelerate a space craft sufficiently to visit, say, a nearby star system in a half-way decent amount of time, it would be an extremely uneconomic adventure at best. you are right of course that even the mere existence of aliens is only conjecture until real proof is found(perhaps the SETI project will one day strike,ahem,gold).
