Lee,

Thanks. Now when I think of the doctrine of equivalents I'm always gonna have the mental picture of that duck in mind 8=)

Anyway, I don't have the details of the lawsuit in mind, but here's an account written by a Japanese regarding Ampex's core patents in magnetic recording. It is reasonable to infer that their successful protection of those patents became a very useful template for the protection of the other inventions they came up with. At least, that's the calculation going on.

Magnetic tape recorder research

In the 1960's, NHK laboratories initiated extensive research activities on magnetic video tape recording. Japan needed to develop its own technology base in this area since Ampex Corporation, the inventor of quadruplex video recording technology, had thoroughly safeguarded its technology through a group of U.S. and foreign patents.Ampex's patent position was so strong and far reaching that any organization intending to manufacture video recorders during the 1960-1980 period had to first become an Ampex licensee. The only exception was RCA, which cross-licensed its color television broadcasting technology in return for Ampex video-recording know-how.

Again, Lee, thanks for your thoughts.

Gus
